By the end of the first world war there seems to have been a lot more definitional rigidity, a loss of fluidity in how friendship and love (and homosexuality and "unnatural vice") were understood.

I would call this a sustainable position! there was an attempt to produce The Quorum: A Magazine of Friendship in 1920 and it died after one issue. According to the introduction by Tim D'Arch Smith to the recent limited edition reprint, George Ives was actually very hostile to this initiative.
