Yeah, the fandom reaction is key for me here - like I was into Supernatural for a while which was a show with a whooooooole lot of problems, but the fandom engaged in critical and interesting ways. But then that started to die off (it turned out to be a very long-lived canon for TV!) and my interest went with it. And of course the reaction is proportionately stronger for a single-creator fandom like Harry Potter. I do sometimes read fic in HP still but the only ones that catch my attention these days are ones directly challenging JKR's transphobia (and other issues, but primarily the one that's doing real and current harm).
