Silksong! First impressions

Silksong is finally out! "Fortunately" I didn't make it home by 4pm on Thursday meaning I only had to wait a little over an hour of frequent refreshing until I could finally buy the game xD

It's so much fun! Very reminiscent of Hollow Knight in a good way: atmosphere, gameplay, level design... And very hard. But (most of) the fights are fun to figure out, and the successes feel great. Tbh the main reason why I wish it didn't take me so long is because I'm already really looking forward to watching others play, but I also don't want any spoilers.

Minor gameplay spoilers )

My actual playthrough, the first almost ten hours, with plenty of spoilers:
(Benchmark, I have three achievements for defeating bosses so far and explored a bit further into the ~next region; and I strongly suspect the first three bosses will probably be the same for most people.)
My actual playthrough, with spoilers )

Yesterday I played until 2am, today hopefully not quite as long. Tomorrow I'm at a friend's birthday party, and I might think the timing more unfortunate if I didn't suspect my wrists will be glad for the break... But I have no other plans for Sunday except play, looking forward to it. (Well, that and watch a few of the MCSR Playoffs finale matches when I need a break, we'll see.)

Hockey RPF: Game Plan by thehoyden

Fandom: Hockey RPF
Pairings/Characters: Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin
Rating: Explicit
Length: 10,281 words / 1hr podfic
Creator Links: thehoyden on AO3, exmanhater on AO3
Theme: Food & Cooking

Summary: Unlike Nealsy, Evgeni can cook his own food when he has it. He’s perfectly capable of making breakfast. His kitchen is well-equipped, and he’s got some good basic cooking skills down. In short, he is not going to starve to death if left to his own devices.

None of this seems to matter to Sid.

Reccer's Notes: This is a story about seduction by breakfast. As the title says, there is a clear game plan at work here -- possibly more than one. Much of the charm of the story is in how oblivious the determined seducer is to the effect he is having and how bewildered his target is that it's not clear how willing he is to be seduced.

Bonus: the descriptions of the ever-more-elaborate breakfasts are fantastic.

There's an accompanying podfic by exmanhater that is a delicious listen as well.

Vaguely beset by nigglesomeness

Including being gaslit by the Royal Mail, like, I know they sent me a text yesterday and a text this am saying they were delivering A Parcel, but when I went to look as the window was drawing to a close, could not find, while online tracking said something entirely different (parcel still in transit to local sorting office).

In fact, Parcel has just turned up, several hours after indicated.

***

Phone doing Weird Stuff - well, part of this is not phone per se, it was O2, as in, when I was out and about in the world the other day my web data allowance ran out and they send this message about texting 'WEBDAILY' to get a top-up, so I did, and did it? not until yesterday, which was totally pointless.

Plus, in relation to niggle this morning about Downstairs Flat having an electricity thing doing which involved turning off the Main Meter deep in the cellar which affects both flats, was trying to use phone as a hotspot with my laptop and it wanted some network authorisation code? With old phone this used to come up on the actual phone? Though I was also having issues with bluetooth and this may be down to ageing laptop....

***

So there was also that thing of morning routine being disrupted by electricity being turned off. (Though now this thing has been done maybe we too can get a Smart Meter set up, because as I recall having to get at that was the issue.)

***

Have actually, this week, started on outstanding overdue essay review, as well as putting it some more effort on keynote presentation for end of month (this is still a goer and is actually up on their site that I am speaking).

Moderate yay me?

Have just been contacted by A Young Scholar who I feel has imprinted on me like a gosling about an article of theirs currently going through the submission process....

***

GP has requested to make appointment re routine medication review, which I have done, but am a bit anxious about (but perhaps I can get them put sumatriptan back on the routine medications list????).

***

However, in better news, the grocery delivery came early enough that I have been able to get a sardegnera on the go for supper!

[embodiment] that was the other thing I meant to say about EIB

Or at least "the other line I meant to highlight from the Wikipedia article":

There is increasing evidence that the smooth muscle that lines the airways becomes progressively more sensitive to changes that occur as a result of injury to the airways from dehydration.

I had only taken 700ml of water with me; I'd blithely assumed I'd be able to top up at the café and then had Too Much Social Anxiety to ask or even check whether they had a jug out, because that's a thing my brain is definitely Doing at the moment. ... and then on the way back I was desperately thirsty and stole most of A's water, and I am just personally finding it Very Interesting that the thing my body wanted me to do most was More Fluids.

Yesterday I beat the Capra demon

Please enjoy this eloquent depiction of The Capra Demon Experience:

(Content note for animal harm in the form of killing horrifying skinless zombie dogs. Also one man's slow descent into existential despair.)

This is a notorious point where a not insignificant number of people ragequit and stop playing the game altogether.

Also as previously mentioned I struggle badly with tracking multiple inputs, I have the reaction speed of a slime mould, and my default combat state is "panicked and flustered."

It took me about 7 hours (spread across multiple days -- admittedly, most of this time was doing the boss run again and again and again and then dying within seconds of the fight starting) and I am very proud of myself.

(And right now I am dealing with a medical stressor -- hopefully nothing, but had to go get some tests, waiting on results -- so I will take my distractions and wins where I can get them.)

SGA: Clean Plate Club by yin_again

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Evan Lorne, Simpson, Radek Zelenka, Laura Cadman, Sam Carter, Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neill, Stackhouse/ Markham
Rating: Explicit
Length: 7963
Content Notes: no AO3-type warnings apply
Creator Links: yin's old site on Wayback, yin_again on AO3, yin on LJ
Themes: Food and cooking, First time, Complete AU

Summary: Rodney looked at the prep area and nodded decisively. "How do you feel about waffles?"
"I love waffles," John said with a grin.

Reccer's Notes: This is the initial and main story in yin's Clean Plate Club 'verse, in which John's a sought-after photographer and Rodney's a chef turned food stylist (he prepares and arranges food for perfect photo shoots). It's a fun meet-cute with clever dialogue, great characterisation and a very hot first time. It's enormous fun, even if the "hero food" meticulously arranged by Rodney is actually dressed with glycerine and motor oil!

Fanwork Links: Clean Plate Club on Wayback (scroll down a little and you'll see this fic and the others in the 'verse.)
And yin also recorded it as a podfic, here.

Update

Reading: I finished The Dictionary of Forgotten Words, which was very good. In an effort not to fall back into MB or ROL I downloaded Liane Moriaty's Here One Moment, read by Caroline Lee and Geraldine Hakewill. People in RL keep pushing her books at me but this is the first one I've actually started.

Watching: We finished S3 of The Good Place and are taking a short break. Why is this show so good?

Gaming: I finally figured out that the door that was stumping me in Ori and the Blind Forest was unnecessary - it just lead to a spirit container and those things are everywhere. So I'm making good progress again. For me, that means it takes me ages to do anything that requires a fast reaction time, but if I really can't do the thing I get the dude to do it for me. :-)

I also played through Gorogoa, as it was on sale. Beautifully made, challenging, just a pleasure. I did have to look up a walkthrough at a couple of puzzles that required you to move quickly.

Making stuff: Still spinning this enormous cabled sock yarn project. I'm knitting a handspun loop scarf for a friend whose birthday is next week, so I need to finish that! I'm pondering making a Basque cheesecake for Father's Day on Sunday.

Other stuff: I wrote an email to my local Member of Parliament about how disgusted I am with the sneaky passing of the Migration Amendment Bills, which allows the government to pay third countries to accept non-citizens, including recognised refugees. /o\ /o\ /o\

This morning I sent an email around at work about setting up your workstation and didn't check that the link I'd pasted in was the correct one. Now all my colleagues know about my Murderbot obsession. /o\ /o\ /o\

Gorgeous Spring weather, blossoms everywhere, people sneezing. Hope you're all well! <3

Daily Happiness

1. I've been making good progress on the high priority tasks the Japan IT team left for me when they went back to Japan at the end of last week.

2. The other day Carla and I were talking about sandwiches and I remembered this delicious veggie sandwich I used to get back in college. The place isn't around anymore, so I can't look it up to see exactly what was on it, but it was whole wheat bread with cream cheese, sprouts, cucumber, and some other veggies. I have cream cheese and sprouts already so asked Carla to get bread and cucumbers at the store and she found that they sell Cheesecake Factory brown bread in sandwich bread form now at the grocery store (they've been selling the little loaves like in the restaurant for a while) and that goes perfect with this sandwich. She also got some avocados, so I had sprouts, cucumber, and avocado on it and it was so good. Definitely going to make that for lunch again tomorrow.

3. Tuxie is still so wary of me, but he was very cute hiding in the planter the other day.
