30 days of TV meme

While I, er, await my chance to watch the S3 finale of Person of Interest, I guess I'll do the first post of the 30 days of your favorite TV show meme created by [livejournal.com profile] liadtbunny. I'll try to do all 30 days of this, though they may not be 30 consecutive days because my internet is still doing this thing where it disappears unexpectedly for sometimes quite long stretches of time.

I'll be talking about POI, of course, not because it's necessarily my favorite show ever but because it's where my most active fannish interest is right now.

(Note to [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant: in case you want to read these, I'll warn if they contain S3 spoilers. This one doesn't.)

1. Favourite episode

It's so hard to choose just one! Especially since the things I like best about POI, namely the characters, backstory, and "mythology," are developed slowly and any given episode may just contain a scene or two of a long arc.

But since I have to choose, I'll go with the S2 finale "God Mode," written by Jonathan Nolan and the brilliant and much missed (he left the show after S2) Patrick Harbinson. The present-day plot is powerful and well-constructed, but what makes it my favorite are the flashbacks to Harold and Nathan Ingram. This is the episode where it's finally revealed how Nathan died and how Harold was injured, and it breaks my heart without ever being melodramatic or manipulative. This episode is the culmination of two years of setup, and amazingly it fully justifies all the investment. It's a rare show that can sustain an arc for that long, and while I think there were a couple of missteps along the way, the way "God Mode" wraps things up is perfect.

Also, we learn that when Reese loves someone, he doesn't so much set them free as plant a tracking device on them. Obsessive and possibly unhealthy devotion is one of my kinks, what can I say?
