I've been watching Secret Army, a late-1970s British show that can be summed up as: most of the people who brought you Colditz do a show about the WWII Belgian escape-and-evasion lines that helped escaping POWs and downed airmen.

First episode: Gritty but somehow noncommittal.
Second episode: Noncommittal then suddenly GRIM AS A GRIM THING.
Third episode: Heartbreaking.
Fourth episode: Grim with occasional disturbing flashes of sexiness.
Fifth episode: GRIM AS FUCK ARRRRRRRGH.
Sixth episode: Heartbreaking.

I'm slightly afraid to watch any more, although it's a really good show.

(Incidentally, for those of you who've seen 'Allo 'Allo, which is probably more of you than have seen Colditz, this is the show that 'Allo 'Allo parodies. I may need to watch some 'Allo 'Allo as an antidote.)

I haven't seen that (and it sounds too bleak for me) but I did enjoy Enemy at the Door which was made around the same time I think and is about the German occupation of Guernsey. A friend posted about it and we downloaded it a couple of years ago.
