kindkit: Man sitting on top of a huge tower of books, reading. (Fandomless--book tower)

recs needed

Help me, internets, you're my only hope! I have a cold and all I want to do is lie in bed reading good fanfic, or at least something id-y, with queer men who love each other and also save the world, or take over the world, or fight crime, or something. Even male/male subtext would be okay! I'll take subtext if it's a non-fanfic story and it's not actively homophobic.

I've tried [community profile] fancake, but my tastes (and my fandoms) don't often seem to mesh with those of the folks who rec there.

Please rec me things! Fandom doesn't matter too much--in this mood I'll read things for fandoms I don't know--but there are some fandoms that won't work for me. Some that spring to mind are Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Bandom/Popslash, and sports RPF. Recs for professionally published things are welcome too, though it would help if they're available as e-books.

So bored, so bored, oh god please help.

Relatedly: are Margery Allingham's Campion books really terrible in the sense of being racist/sexist/antisemitic/homophobic? I've been watching a few episodes of the TV series with Peter Davison and it seems like the novels could be fun. But even one of the TV eps was pretty homophobic, so I'm nervous.

Saw this on Network- you might enjoy Kathe Koja's Under the Poppy and The Mercury Waltz. They're a duology with a canon queer male couple set in a nonspecific historical setting with lots of intrigue. They're available for Kindle and probably other formats as well. Flawed but enjoyable, I thought.

No earthly clue if it'll suit your tastes, but I just read and thoroughly enjoyed the two-part Memoranda of Understanding series by mydwynter. BBC Sherlock, POV character is Greg Lestrade, pairing Lestrade/Mycroft Holmes (with bits of John/Sherlock very much in the background). Good writing, good characterization, a good deal of hot sex, and the relationship evolves over time in ways that made sense to me. Almost 90K words, so if you like it, it'll last you a while.

ETA: Reads as complete even though there's apparently going to be another story in the series at some point.

Have you read Hawks and Hands by Dira Sudis?

it's a Due South AU involving hockey. So I don't think you have to know the cano to like it.

It's epic with lots of M/M angst and ust and rst.

Hope that helps.

Just checked the story out but it lost me when I couldn't find a summary and saw the footnotes. And I hate it when people use a foreign language in a text just to post the translation.

Afterthought -- non-fannish this time -- this is by lamardeuse, who you may know from dS or other fandoms.

Bonds of Earth by G N Chevalier

WWI era, m/m, injured soldier returns home from the war.

I liked it. Non-fluffy but won't break you, either. Well-researched.

I can't immediately recall explicit homophobia in Allingham, although there is some fairly crude stereotyping. The racism, and the class attitudes, however, can be pretty blatant. The sexism quotient varies - the recurring character Amanda Fitton is a competent engineer, but there are also some seriously cringemaking things, esp in The Fashion in Shrouds.
