I found it surprisingly motivational. Now I'll have to try to be motivated by building it up again.

Well, you don't have to pay at all. But it does keep track of your "streak" (how many consecutive days you've met your practice goal), and if you miss a day it goes back to zero. Duolingo then offers to restore it, for a price.
