1) Today I belatedly ate my Thanksgiving dinner (the main course was stuffed turkey breast en croute--frozen, from Trader Joe's, and I didn't realize until yesterday morning that it had to thaw for 24 hours before cooking) and belatedly watched the final of the Great British Bake Off.
I was surprised at first by the decision; I thought Chigs had it. But after a moment's thought it seemed fair; in the final, Paul and Pru consider the skill shown throughout the competition. And while Giuseppe made a couple of serious screw-ups under pressure, I'm willing to believe that he was the best baker overall. Though it does make me a bit sad for Jurgen, eliminated in the semi-final, who was arguably a better baker overall than Crystelle.
You may recall from an earlier post that I didn't care for Chigs at first. He seemed to be doing that thing you sometimes see from men on the Bake Off, where they overcompensate for the perceived femininity of baking by being a bit silly and theme-ing everything around football and snooker. But he mostly stopped doing that, and his fundamental kindness and decency became so clear that it was impossible not to like him. (I loved his tackle-hug of Giuseppe when the results were announced.) And Chigs was the baker who seemed to me to be working the hardest and improving his skills the most. (Crystelle would take second place in that category. And it was the big problem with Jurgen--he started out quite good but never got much better or stretched out of his comfort zone.)
A good Bake Off year, I think. Good bakers and nice people. I hope fans are writing fic about Lizzie and Freya's road trip, because that is adorable.
2) I was sorry to hear of the death of Stephen Sondheim. Musicals are not my cup of tea, but watching Sweeney Todd as a teenager nearly convinced me otherwise. His work meant an enormous amount to many, many people, which is the measure of an artist.
3) ETA: I got to do some RPG-ing again! We played a one-shot of Seventh Sea, which is a sort of alt-history + magic adventure game. I played Roberto Gallo, an aristocrat-turned-criminal-turned-scholarly-adventurer, which was enormous fun. In the course of about three hours of play, Roberto got to scare off a bunch of guardsmen by waving a gun at them while describing the effects of gunshot wounds, and (separately) save the day by seducing someone whose heart had previously been broken by another member of the party. We play again in December--another one-shot, to help us get into the groove of playing together before starting a longer campaign. And after December, hopefully everyone's schedules will permit our playing more often.
