I should be at work right now, but I'm not, because my car is currently stuck in the middle of a crime scene. As in, there's a dead body in the parking lot about five feet away from it. Apparently he was shot, because the cops asked if I'd heard any gunshots last night. (There are screens around the body, but I live on the third floor and saw over the top of them on my way downstairs. Luckily he was still partly concealed and I didn't see anything gory.)

I don't remember hearing anything, and I'd have expected to hear a shot that close. I guess it's possible I woke up but went right back to sleep and don't remember.

I should be able to get out and go to work in about 45 minutes to an hour. I really hope my car isn't in any way evidence.

It all feels very weird. I've lived most of my adult life in high-crime areas, but while I've experienced property crime (apartment burgled, car stolen) this is the first time someone's been murdered where I live.

I was as close once as it happening at the end of the street where I lived and that was still very strange. I am sorry.

Thanks. It's been on my mind all day, because unfortunately I do tend to brood on things that upset me. But I'll watch a movie or something* tonight to take my mind off it.

*Probably I will end up rewatching OFMD again or re-reading my favorite fics.

Yeah. On the one hand, I didn't know the victim and none of this affects me directly apart from the minor inconvenience of being an hour late for work. On the other . . . well, it's still pretty awful and distressing. So I keep going back and forth between feeling freaked out and feeling guilty for feeling freaked out, like I'm overdramatizing. *sigh*
