kindkit: Eighth Doctor in profile, looking moody (Doctor Who: Eight profile b&w)

no no no no no no

Apparently the BBC have changed the Eighth Doctor's costume for all future promotional images.

Assuming this is true and wasn't Paul McGann's little joke: NO. JUST NO.

The Eighth Doctor's clothes--his ridiculous, old-fashioned, foppish velvet coat and waistcoat and cravat--are indicative of his character. He wouldn't be the same in a boring, cheap-looking "naval jacket" and a courier bag. NOT EVERY INCARNATION OF THE DOCTOR NEEDS TO BE HIP AND MODERN, BBC.

Yes, I am having nerd!rage about this.

*frowns* That makes no sense. They haven't updated any of the other Doctors' costumes. And a messenger bag? Really? That's what pockets are for.

Agreed. It's not a bad coat, but it's not the 8th Doctor at all. What would be the point of changing his look for promotional images, anyway, as he isn't the current Doctor? *shakes head*

I'm hoping this is a joke on McGann's part - if it is, it'd be funny, as it's now being reported as "news". Has there been any word from the BBC on this?

I suspect that's a joke - if they were doing a new costume, it wouldn't be any of McGann's own clothes, and they've shown no interest in updating anyone else. But the wooden sonic screwdriver is cool!
