outrunning the bears

Yuletide draft done and sent to beta. There's still a lot of work to do, but I no longer feel the bears nipping at my heels--they're at least a pace behind me now!

Note to self: Next time, don't wait until December to start, no matter how absorbed you may be in the other thing you're writing.
