kindkit: The Fifth Doctor looks at Turlough from a distance. (Doctor Who: Five and Turlough distant)
[personal profile] sineala asked about my favorite Classic Who stories and why I love them. I've divided it up by Doctors, because there was no way I could pick just one or two stories for all of Classic Who. Or even all I've seen of it, which is the Second, Third, Fifth, and Eighth Doctors, most of the Fourth Doctor episodes, and a few of the First and Sixth.

Unusually for me, I've been listening to Big Finish audios. It's unusual not because I don't like them, but because I have real difficulty sitting still and concentrating when it's just sound (I can also never just listen to music). But if I play solitaire on the computer, it keeps the restless part of my brain occupied enough that I can listen.

Below the cut are brief, non-spoilery reactions to "Phantasmagoria" (Fifth Doctor and Turlough), "Loups Garoux" (Fifth Doctor and Turlough), "Singularity" (Fifth Doctor and Turlough), "Ringpullworld" (Turlough Companion Chronicle), and "The Glorious Revolution" (Jamie Companion Chronicle).

A quick late night, should've-been-in-bed-ages-ago whinge: the BFA "Loups Garoux" is not remotely as slashy as I've seen people claim it is. Gah! Two het romances are two too many for me.

Suddenly, all I want to do is watch Turlough Doctor Who. Today I've mainlined "Terminus" and "Enlightenment," and I hope to watch "The King's Demons" before bed.

I'm partway through the second episode of "Terminus," and . . . this is an AIDS allegory, right? I'm not just imagining that?

The date certainly works--1983 was, as I recall, towards the height of the AIDS panic, since the HIV virus wasn't yet confirmed as the cause and nobody knew for sure how the disease spread.

This story is giving me a very unnerving kind of déjà vu.

I just finished watching "Snakedance," which had a terribly dull plot and was a good example of why allegory often fails. spoiler )

On the other hand, the costumes were gorgeous. Except for Nyssa's--she looked like a cross between a small child on the playground and an extra in an early '80s Madonna video. But I loved the Byzantine feel of the Manussans' costumes, especially the men's coats and Tanha's awesome gowns.

Martin Clunes was not quite gorgeous, but was surprisingly pretty (the kind of soft-faced, pouty pretty that doesn't age well, alas). Jonathon Morris as Chela was even prettier. So at least the episode was worth looking at.

Up next: "Mawdryn Undead"! Turlough, yay! I've been looking forward to Turlough for a long, long time.

I've skipped ahead several seasons in my Doctor Who viewing, which I feel a bit guilty about. But it's renewed my interest and surely that's a good thing?

Some reactions below the cut. Not deep or profound, not even particularly well organized. There are spoilers for the episodes listed in the subject heading and for "The End of Time."
