And by "substantial" I mean "another life-story fic, of which I have written two for this fandom already." Dunno about length, since I've barely started, but I have a fair number of ideas about Izzy.
Anyway. A little bit of young!Izzy under the cut. Not particularly a happy bit, though.

He remembered his father, more or less. The size of him, tall as the sky and an ell broad at the shoulders, surely. His voice, low and sternly-soft, only raised when he preached sometimes at chapel, filling in for the minister. It was a voice for prayer, without much laughter in it, but without shouting either. Izzy never saw him drunk; when he went to the tavern on payday he had two pints of good English beer and not a drop of devilish gin, and then he came home. When he thrashed Izzy for wickedness it was soberly, after prayer, and never a time when Izzy didn't deserve it.
Izzy must have wept for him at some time, though he didn't remember that either.
