I am the world's slowest knitter, so I can't speak to speed, but there's a limit to how heavy you want to go for socks. Yarn sold as 'sock yarn' is-- well, it's sock weight; google will turn up lots of images next to rulers or pennies for scale.
Well, they're meant to be very heavy wool socks for extremely cold conditions. (Er, I'm not actually knitting anything, this is just for a reference in a fic.) Anyway, from the answers I'm getting, it sounds like a good knitter with plenty of time to work could knit a pair of socks in 2-3 days, which is what I was hoping for. Thanks!
