30 days of fanfic meme, question 18
Jul. 21st, 2011 11:03 am18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
Generally, from what's not there in the text. That can take a lot of forms. Slash itself is one of them, since I usually (although not always) build on what I see as an implied depth or intensity of feeling that the source doesn't develop. Or perhaps I want to explore a character who's subsidiary in canon, or fill in a missing scene, or examine how things got this way or what happened after the end, or just take a look at these characters in their off time, when they're not running around advancing the plot. Maybe the source leaves me with questions (in Sanctuary, what are the Big Guy's own people like and why did he leave them?); maybe there's a crux or a plothole (why does XMFC's Erik Lehnsherr speak English with an Irish accent? why doesn't the Third Doctor try to fix what happened to Jamie and Zoe?)
At other times, I want to take the text in a different direction. What if the Wishverse, in Buffy, never got reset? What if Voldemort won? And occasionally, I write fic to directly critique aspects of the text, such as the right-wing national security state ideology of The Professionals or the racism on Top Gear.
