Dec. 4th, 2022 07:16 pm9. What's the hardest thing about writing, and why are titles the Worstâ„¢?
The hardest thing about writing is the anxiety. The fear of not being able to write at all, the fear of not being able to finish something, the fear of not achieving what I want to achieve with the story, the fear of it all just being shit.
I'm learning to cope (and certainly I'm coping a lot better with it, so far, than I did before my multi-year hiatus from writing). What seems to be working for me, so far, is to Just Keep Writing. Write now and edit later. Get words on the page and we'll fix it all in post-production.
Another good things about this, for me, is that it opens the door to serendipity. My two 10,000+ word stories from this year both took turns I never expected them to take when I started, because I just kept writing and ideas happened.
At the moment I have an idea I'm toying with, that I'm nervous about not being able to handle. Which probably means I should just start writing it.
As for titles: they're the worst because they have so much work to do: intrigue the reader, set a tone, express something important about the story that you want the reader to have in mind as they read, etc. etc. For the same reason, the next Worst after titles is summaries.
