Previously, on The Saga of Kit's Computer, my computer had not responded well to being shut down and moved. I was planning to see if the nuclear option, aka a clean reinstall, would work.
Well, for about a day, it looked like it would. But then I tried restoring my backed-up files to the computer, and it did not like that one bit, and now I can't even convince it to give me reinstalling as an option. I'm going to try one more time tonight, but if it doesn't work I'm going to have to declare the poor thing officially a doorstop.
There are options I could try for a cheap computer--craigslist, refurbished laptops available retail--but I think this might be throwing money away. Laptops just don't last, at least not the way I use them, which involves them being on a lot because of [REDACTED]. It probably makes more sense to spend $500 or so on a new desktop system than to spend $250 on something used that may not have much life in it.
Unfortunately, because expenses never come one at a time, the other day I had to put two new tires on my car. Luckily this situation occurred at a time when I had the money to pay for it, but it means less money available now for the computer.
To cut a long story short, it may be a month or two before I'm regularly back online. *sob* Right now I'm using library computers, but between the time limits and my discomfort with reading journals or fanfic or whatever in public (and it's VERY public), my fannish interactions are going to be hella limited. I miss you all!!!!!
ETA: Everything's fine otherwise. I'm mostly liking the new place.
