The last episode. My episode summary is in the post; my own reactions will be in the comments on LJ. Anyone's welcome to join in. I'm avoiding any S4 spoilers that may be floating around online, so please don't mention any.

3x23, "Deus Ex Machina," by Greg Plageman and David Slack

Vigilance's show trial commences. The group has kidnapped a defense attorney, a jury, and some journalists to witness. Collier kills Manuel Rivera on the witness stand for his defiance. Control refuses to answer questions and doesn't reveal that she knows Finch built the machine. She's found guilty by the jury and is about to be executed when Finch intervenes: he'll tell everything he knows if the other "defendants" are spared.

In flashbacks, we see Collier recruited into Vigilance by someone who only interacts with him by computer and text messages. With goading from this person, Collier is gradually radicalized and pushes Vigilance first to target people for exposure and then to use violence. When an undercover FBI agent is discovered in the group, Collier kills him.

Reese and Hersh track the trial location to an abandoned post office. Meanwhile, Shaw helps Root infiltrate the Decima server farm and install the seven servers she's modified.

As the jury is about to vote on Finch's guilt, the trial is attacked by Decima operatives. The defendants are evacuated to a backup location (which turns out to be the roof of the building across the street) while everyone else stays in the post office. Hersh discovers that the post office basement is packed with explosives; he tries to disarm the bomb while telling Reese to get away and find Finch.

Vigilance is about to summarily execute Finch and possibly the others when Decima operatives arrive, kill all the Vigilance guards, and free everyone but Finch and Collier. John Greer then reveals that he created and controlled Vigilance as black propaganda. The bomb in the post office will be blamed on Vigilance and Samaritan will be pushed forward. As the lights come back on in New York, the bomb explodes, killing everyone in the building.

Lambert, the Decima agent, kills Collier and is about to kill Finch when Reese arrives. Finch is wounded in the shoulder and Greer and Lambert escape; Greer calls Senator Ross Garrison and Garison agrees to give Samaritan full access to all government surveillance feeds.

Root lets Finch know that they all have to flee. She's set up new identities and used the servers to create "blind spots" in Samaritan for Finch, Reese, Shaw, Root, and Root's three helpers. In the closing montage, we see the library stormed by a SWAT team, Reese and Finch escaping on foot and reluctantly separating, Root and Shaw separating, and the murders of other people Samaritan has identified as targets including one of the last Vigilance members.

Samaritan comes fully online, including its AI, and asks for orders. Greer asks it to give its orders instead. The episode ends with a shot of Samaritan's computer screen and the words "Calculating Response . . . "
