Some really fairly non-spoilery stuff about the first 15 episodes of the Rusty Quill Gaming podcast under the cut.
Me, about the start listening to the first episode: This will be a fun silly thing and a nice contrast to The Magnus Archives. I won't have to care about the situation or any of the characters.
Me, 15 episodes in: OMG STOP TRAUMATIZING HAMID! CAN'T YOU SEE HE'S HAD ENOUGH? HE NEEDS A HUG. AND A NAP. AND POSSIBLY YEARS OF THERAPY.
*laughs ruefully* I have several "types" in male characters, and Hamid is one of them: vulnerable, unable to hide emotion, neither conventionally manly nor especially interested in being so. (See also: Martin.)
That scene where they're all meeting with Barrett Racket and Hamid (injured, in pain, exhausted, scared out of his mind for several different reasons) starts to cry? That is my jam, so so much. And I loved that--at the time, at least--it wasn't played for comedy particularly, and neither the other characters nor the players reacted with derision. (There's been some derision since, mostly from Bryn Monroe commenting OOC, and I wish he wouldn't.)
I realize there's no doubt a lot more to Hamid than this, including some dark secrets and the possibility that he'll someday turn into a dragon, but for now I adore him in all his well-dressed, doe-eyed, squishy glory. I'm reassured to see that he's still a character in the current episodes.

Date: 2020-02-10 07:11 pm (UTC)Spoiler/fair warning: they will not. Because Alex.
Okay, I haven't listened to any other actual play podcasts, so I don't have a basis for comparison, but:

Also you are very much not the only person to react that way to Hamid:

Maybe it's a styles-of-humour thing, but for all the joking about Hamid crying (or vomiting) all the time, I don't get the sense that Bryn or anyone else thinks less of him for it, and Bryn gives Hamid some very moving and credible emotional reactions in the show.
Important information: listen past the end of the credits as they put bloopers (and sundry other comic detours edited out of the ep proper) there.

Date: 2020-02-13 12:39 am (UTC)Not even hugs that are in some way evil!
Aaaaaaaaaaaand despite everything, I'm now kind of hoping that means there are evil hugs as well. Because apparently I am incapable of not shipping characters I like (e.g. Hamid, Jon) with a certain kind of well-mannered villain (Barrett Racket, Elias).

Date: 2020-02-13 12:34 am (UTC)Oh, I know. I have accepted* that no character that Rusty Quill gets it wicked little hands on will be okay.
(*I have absolutely not accepted this. I mean, I know it's true, but I keep hoping for
the universeGodAlex and/or Jonny to make exceptions for my favorites.)I don't get the sense that Bryn or anyone else thinks less of him for it
Oh, no, me neither. I still wish it hadn't been joked about at all, but what that basically means is that I wish men weren't socialized into feeling uncomfortable with any overt emotion except anger, so that even when they want to express sadness or fear or whatever (or have their characters express it) there has to be this kind of lip service paid to the taboo via joking. *wishes away the patriarchy*

*nods* Like the birthday present from his parents. *gives Hamid a virtual hug*

Ooh, thanks!

Date: 2020-02-15 08:35 am (UTC)* Same preference for being totally unspoiled re: RQG? Apologies if I've hinted too much and you don't want to know (e.g.) if Hamid gets hugs. Or is that level acceptable but not more? Anyway, lemme know.

Date: 2020-02-16 02:39 am (UTC)And yes, I'd love to be able to discuss these fandoms with more people here on DW. I've subscribed to them but it would be great if you mentioned who I am. Thanks!
BTW having now introduced a colleague to TMA, I have an even greater appreciation for how hard it is to resist saying spoilery things.
