tma relisten, still not quite done
Apr. 21st, 2020 12:13 pmI re-listened to 154, "Bloody Mary," and the way Martin treats Jon still hurts SO MUCH. Even knowing everything turns out all right between them (so far, at least).
It's not every fandom where you want to yell at the characters: "Yes, gouge your eyes out! This is a VERY GOOD IDEA! Do it!!!!!"
(Presumably they would've both had to gouge their eyes out, right? Martin has an employment contract too. I'm not sure how Jon thought two newly blinded, seriously injured people would run away together, but I think we can excuse him for not being entirely rational in that moment.)
(Also, I wouldn't put it past Elias to have hunted them down and killed them out of spite. And if not him, then one of the many other monsters Jon annoyed. So maybe it wasn't actually a missed opportunity for their safety and happiness, though they would have saved the world without knowing it.)
Nevertheless, when Martin laughs at Jon and is so contemptuous of him, it hurts. Of course Jon has behaved terribly towards Martin a bunch of times. But that was a while back, before Jon began to know him properly and love him. When Martin is cruel to Jon in 154, he's cruel to someone he love(s)(d). And even though Martin is deep in the Lonely, it's still Martin saying it, feeling it, and it hurts.
ETA: I went to the Magnus wiki to double-check the episode number and made the mistake of reading the comments. Ugh, the homophobia.
