kindkit3. You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them?
Ed/Stede is my favorite pairing in this fandom: my OTP in the sense that I think they're very right for each other and should live happily ever after. Once they get through, um, this current rough patch.
But this question is particularly tough for them because there's canonical reason to think that neither would be open to an OT3. They're jealous of each other's exes in a pretty intense way. Ed's jealous of Mary as soon as Stede--with whom he hasn't exchanged a word yet--says her name in a delirium. And Stede is jealous of Jack long before Jack tells him that he and Ed have slept together. They're very young emotionally, immoderate, all highs and lows and drama. Even if either/both of them wanted a poly relationship, I don't think they're emotionally ready for it, and wouldn't be for a long time.
Nevertheless, I will try to answer the question. I think the more likely scenario than an OT3 is that after few years, when they've gotten over some of their Issues, they agree on the occasional threesome to spice things up. They have them with strangers that they'll never see again, to avoid emotional complications; very possibly with sex workers, for maximum straightforwardness and ease.
But this doesn't answer the question as asked. My first and perhaps most important answer to "who would be the third in this loving OT3?" is: not Izzy. I know some folks are into it, but I can't believe it for a moment. First of all, while Ed and Stede are jealousy-prone, Izzy is as territorial as a junkyard dog. He doesn't even like it that Stede is allowed to call Ed by his name! He wants Stede dead, and given the situation at the end of S1, where Stede has really seriously hurt Ed and Izzy has had to pick up the pieces, that's not likely to change. Izzy and Stede are not so much oil and water as sodium and water. If you mix them, things catch fire and explode.
So not Izzy. And also not Lucius, who I think is fandom's other preferred OT3 choice. (1) Lucius has his own busy love life. (2) He's shown no romantic/sexual interest in Ed or Stede, who are twice his age with half his good sense. If that. (2a) He's been yenta-ing the two of them like mad, which suggests a very different kind of investment in their relationship.
The person I could most easily see making the OT3 happen is actually Frenchie. He's laid back, calm (this is important given the other two), not romantically attached that we know of, and I think he's the only one of the Revenge's crew, apart from Stede and Lucius, who sees Ed as a person. Frenchie, at the party, saw Ed's humiliation and cared about it. He was kind and supportive. To Blackbeard. Frenchie's probably the closest of the crew (after Lucius) to Stede as well. Not very close, but he's heard Stede's diarizing, witnessed Stede's passive aggressive triumph, and pushed back a little against Stede's bullshit during the fuckery rehearsal. Plus, we know Frenchie enjoys a nice suit of clothes.
What I'd envision for them emotionally is a situation where Frenchie is cherished, adored, made much of, and is (sorry) utterly peripheral to the connection between Ed and Stede. Ed and Stede are just so much to each other that there's hardly any room left. This could still be an enjoyable situation, depending on the needs of the people involved. But if Frenchie wants to be most important or even equally important to someone, he'll have to look elsewhere.
N.B. OFMD has a canonically-hinted three-way relationship in the form of Lucius, Pete, and Fang. I think it's more "Lucius has a main boyfriend and a second boyfriend" than an OT3, but it's way happier and more functional than anything I can envision for Ed, Stede, and a third person.
