My afternoon so far:

Think, "I have the day off! Maybe I should play one of those games I got from the itch.io Bundle for Racial Jusice and Equality!"

Decide to play Oxenfree, because I've heard it's good.

Attempt to download it from the web page. Am able to download it, but can't open it.

Google around. Discover that itch.io would quite like me to download its desktop app and play games on that instead.

Download app.

Am unable to play, download, or in some cases even find games from my purchased bundle in the app.

Google around until I figure out how to do that.

Install Oxenfree in the app, yay! It takes forever, but yay!

Click "launch." Get error message which says that 3D acceleration has failed, and I should check that I have the right version and drivers for the graphics thingy.

Google around until I figure out how to do that.

Do that. Everything is correct.

Google around some more. Discover that this is a known glitch, and the solution is to rename a particular system file.

Attempt to rename system file. Am not allowed to rename system file.

Check that I have administrator rights on my own damn laptop. I do.

In a state of frustrated rage ("why can't I make this thing WORK, why am I SO STUPID???") that is not good for my mental health, restart computer.

Play some Best Fiends on my phone while laptop restarts, because at least that works.

Re-attempt launch. Still does not work.

Make disgruntled post on DreamWidth.

The Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality is available at itch.io for a minimum donation of $5. It contains almost 750 things, mostly games but also some tools for game creators, with a retail value of almost $3500. Half of the proceeds go to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and half to the Community Bail Fund.

It's available for 9 more days.

. . . in totally unrelated news, I now own a hell of a lot of games.

Anyone want to rec me some games? They need to be playable by one person, using a phone or a PC without a controller. I'd prefer science fiction, fantasy, or horror* with a strong story component and not much need for hand-eye coordination or the ability to push a zillion keys in an exact sequence in half a second. And I'd rather pay for the game up front than have to make in-game purchases in order to play successfully.

(*For horror games, please not too gory* and not rape-y at all.)

(ETA: On reflection, "gory" was probably the wrong word. I'm fine with moderate violence [think action movies] and blood, so long as violence isn't the main point of the game. What I'd like to avoid is graphic [think horror movies] violence, and disgusting stuff like zombies.)

Thanks!!
