Housemate and I went to see Thor today at the cheap theater. I'm glad I didn't wait and watch it on DVD, because the special effects of Asgard are rather beautiful.
I enjoyed it a lot overall. There's not much in it that isn't cliché, but it's fairly well done cliché with a good dose of humor to ease things along. And there's Loki, who is awesome. Is it wrong that I kind of wanted Loki to win? Also, I want Loki/Thor slash, because all that complicated love (well, more complicated on Loki's part than Thor's, admittedly) has to go somewhere besides just sulking and plotting. Recommendations are hereby solicited.
Thor himself is . . . nice, once he stops being a jackass. The actor, whoever he is, isn't a great talent, but he made even jackass!Thor genial and sympathetic. And I can't helping liking the fact that the movie's message is basically: political aggression is a really shitty idea. Diplomacy with your enemies works better than invading them. War is not the way to work out your daddy issues,George W. Bush sons of Odin.
It's only once Thor learns restraint and the ability to care about people's lives as more than collateral damage that he becomes worthy. Woot!
The romance didn't annoy me too much, because Jane is written as something approximating a three-dimensional character. Or at least as a smart character with a life before Thor falls into it. Sadly she gets less interesting, and loses her own story, as the romance progresses (I was hoping that Heimdall at the end would see her getting on with her life), but she remains likable.
I do think the whole "adopted child turns against his adoptive family!" and "person from despised race, raised by 'better' race, reverts to type and behaves despicably!" plotlines are . . . well, massively fucked up and deserving of critique. But the movie as a whole just didn't ping my brain the way X-Men: First Class did, which oddly makes me more willing to forgive it its fail.
