I saw Cowboys and Aliens today.
It was a lot of fun in many respects. There are cowboys, there are aliens, there are beautiful New Mexico landscapes, things blow up, and there's Daniel Craig in leather chaps and a frequently missing shirt. (Seriously, at one point an explosion blows his shirt open. Thanks, explosion!) Craig gets beaten up a fair bit too, and since he's gorgeous when bruised/bleeding, this is a plus.
I wish I could recommend it unreservedly as mindless fun. But alas, there is a huge amount of fail in the depiction of Native Americans. The movie sort of tries not to fail, but the fail rate is still about 80%. There's also a really problematic "redemption" of a violent and racist dickhead who doesn't do anything to deserve redemption except be less than completely awful to people he happens to like or be related to. I do not consider this a redemptive quality (see also: the Malfoys).
So whether you'll like this film depends on your ability to compartmentalize. And probably on your feelings about Daniel Craig in leather chaps. There are lots of shots of his ass. And a bit where he's climbing a wall with his legs spread wide and it looks like the beginning of a very promising gay porn movie. And when he's seen from the front, the chaps are what I believe is known as "basket enhancing."
Craig also rocks a cowboy hat. I propose a new Oscar category: Best BAMF in a Hat. He and Michael Fassbender could be the two nominees; there really don't need to be any more.
