I think a teenage Charles would be more able to recognise his own lack of experience in the world
Yes, excellent point. And Erik wouldn't be as worldly as XMFC Erik either--certainly a lot more experienced than Charles in certain (mostly unpleasant) ways, but with his own kind of naiveté and malleability. If they meet when they're both fairly unformed, they can sort of grow (up) together.
building Cerebro themselves rather than with the CIA
*nods vigorously* Charles willingly working with the CIA is the single biggest indication of his naiveté and privilege in XMFC. I can't believe Erik doesn't have some rather scathing opinions about it; his Nazi-hunting experience must mean he knows that the CIA recruited and protected Nazis in the postwar years.
removing traumatic memories
That's a really disturbing idea, but Charles is so cavalier about other people's minds that I agree, I can picture him doing it for Erik's own good. A lot depends on the circumstances and the timing--the real danger zone would be early in their relationship, while Charles is enough in love that Erik's pain hurts him badly but hasn't yet gotten to the point (which I think he does arrive at before they get to Cuba) where he respects Erik's autonomy too much to force "healing" on him.
