I just finished watching "Snakedance," which had a terribly dull plot and was a good example of why allegory often fails. The plot required that the Mara, as in the giant snake, be killed. But that doesn't make a bit of sense on the level of the episode's Buddhist allegory about the Mara existing in the human mind. The result was both intellectually and spiritually incoherent.

On the other hand, the costumes were gorgeous. Except for Nyssa's--she looked like a cross between a small child on the playground and an extra in an early '80s Madonna video. But I loved the Byzantine feel of the Manussans' costumes, especially the men's coats and Tanha's awesome gowns.

Martin Clunes was not quite gorgeous, but was surprisingly pretty (the kind of soft-faced, pouty pretty that doesn't age well, alas). Jonathon Morris as Chela was even prettier. So at least the episode was worth looking at.

Up next: "Mawdryn Undead"! Turlough, yay! I've been looking forward to Turlough for a long, long time.

(laughing at your subject line!)

Some episodes of Who, including this one, remind me of X-Men comics, in that they construct a delicate and often quite deep allegory then KILL IT WITH FIRE! WOO! ACTION FIRE!
