Today I rented the first disc of S1 of Community, because people talk a lot about how fun and fannish and meta it is. I've watched the pilot episode and now I need to ask whether, at some blessed point, it stops being about the unbearable overprivileged rich white heterosexual lawyer guy. Does he quietly fade into the background or get eaten by rabid otters or something? Because every second he was onscreen I was hoping for otters, let me tell you. I don't even want to see him get his comeuppance and learn valuable lessons and become a better person, I just want him off my television screen.

So far I really like Abed and Shirley and Duncan the professor and especially Britta, who is about a thousand times more awesome than I thought they'd let her be.

ETA: A few episodes later, Jeff the Douche is not quite as unbearable and so my loathing isn't quite as homicidal. But I fear the inevitable rom-com arc where Britta is supposed to see what a great guy he is really and start dating him. DO NOT WANT.

ETA2: And he immediately went back to being a douche.

It took the first half of the first season for it to find its footing. He doesn't fade into the background as such - more that he finally blends into the medley without overpowering it.

If you decide you really can't stand to wait until the second season, go ahead and skip to the paintball episode.

I've been watching more since I posted, and in episode 4, the psychology experiment one, I actually didn't want him to die too much. Like, maybe the otters could just maul him a little. In fact I nearly liked him for several minutes when he was Shirley's gossip buddy. So this gives me hope.

And the first kind of fanfic I'm craving . . . gen about Abed and his dad. Huh.

I'm near the end of season 3, and while Jeff is always annoying, the show is less about him. And there's no inevitable Jeff/Britta true love arc so far, which is a relief.

Oh, good. Especially since I now loathe him again.

I felt the same way about him, but it hits its stride in S2 when it becomes much more the Troy and Abed show and thus full of the most wonderful geekiness. Hang in there.

Good, I will be happy to see more Troy and Abed. Especially Abed.

They make an amazing and geeky team and are my favourites. A lot of the eps coming up are just amazing, like the paintball one and the shuttle one. This show really took off later, finding its feet as something really different. I won't say more. :-)

I've seen both of those now and really enjoyed them. I think the show owes a bit debt to Spaced, which was doing the "wacky hijinks that are also pop-culture meta" thing ten years before Community. But it's fun.
