I am, believe it or not, trying to be Cheerful and Positive, fannishly and in other aspects of life. *laughs* Yeah, not one of my natural talents, but it's worth a try occasionally. So, in the spirit of cheerful positivity, a meme.

I'm proudest of Midwinter, definitely. I've never worked so hard on any other story, and while the result is still flawed in certain ways (there's a structural problem that I didn't know how to solve, and still don't), I got a lot of things right. The language is right, riffing on Pratchett's style without copying it. The tone and themes are right, with a slow build of both desire/romance and darkness all the way to a vivid awareness that in the midst of life, in the midst of love, we are in death. There are a lot of little details that I love, too. And it was my first time (in fanfic) creating OCs with depth rather than just functionality, and my first time writing at anywhere near that length.

I re-read my own fic a lot, sometimes out of curiosity, sometimes to learn from old mistakes, and sometimes just because there isn't much fic for that fandom or that pairing. But Midwinter is one of the ones I re-read sometimes just for pleasure, and for the rather delightful feeling of "oh, yeah, I wrote that and it's good!"

BTW about crit: your betas are a lot more helpful than the paid editors of my books and articles, I *usually* don't get anything useful from them, and more often than sometimes they take something that was a correct (if uninspired, and perhaps unclear) English sentence and make it incorrect.

I've only had a beta try to incorrect my prose once, so I guess fandom really is better!
