Has anybody ever made one of those cakes where you boil a couple of oranges for two hours and then grind them up whole and add them to the batter? Does it really work? You don't end up with a bitter cake because of the pith?

I really want to try this but I'm nervous.

Mary Berry made one on one of the Great British Bake-Off specials - I think this is the recipe she used: Whole Orange Spice Cake.

Boiling is supposed to reduce the bitterness, but I've never tried it. If you try it, please tell me how it goes! Not that the oranges are much good here now.

I haven't made a cake like that, but I have eaten a piece of one made by someone else to Nigella Lawson's recipe, and it was deliciously orangey. And no, not bitter!

My housemate made the Nigella Lawson(?) recipe with clementines and almond meal, and it was astonishing. And no, not bitter at all. Also, the house smelled great!

I have!

It's tasty, but can have a somewhat crumply yet heavy texture. So if you're into light fluffy cakes, it's not the best idea.
