Grantchester 1x05
Nov. 3rd, 2014 06:24 pmWell, Sidney and Geordie were having a lovely date until the murder! But poor Leonard, left to cope with Mrs. Maguire and the dog all by himself. (In the books, Hildegarde isn't there for this story--she's in Germany, where Sidney visits her occasionally. This makes more sense than Sidney not inviting Hildegarde along to London.)
Leonard was played for comedy a little too strongly for my taste in this one. I'd have really liked to see him counsel Sidney during Sidney's turmoil, but judging by the preview they're saving that for next week's dose of Sidney's turmoil. I think there's a lot Sidney could learn from Leonard, and vice versa. Yes, of course I ship them, though I also ship Leonard with Ben from last week's episode.
I'm not crazy about either Amanda or Hildegarde; I like them both better in the books, where Amanda is more of a genuinely unconventional free spirit (with a career and everything!) and Hildegarde is more down-to-earth and less of a blonde bombshell type. This is about the only respect in which I like the books better. Even in the books I can't really ship either of them with Sidney (anyway book!Sidney is unshippable, which TV!Sidney definitely is not), so I guess I hope they'll fall for each other and become interesting.
And then Sidney and Leonard can live happily ever after in a sort of polyamorous arrangement* where Sidney gets to have his wild weekends with Geordie and Leonard gets to visit Cambridge and talk about poetry with Ben (in bed).
I note with relief the lack of a girlfriend for Leonard in this episode, which is what I was fearing after the last one. We do see last week's young woman in the sermon scene at the end, sitting in the pew in front of Leonard, and I'm sure this plot thread will be picked up again, but I'm feeling a little more optimistic that Leonard won't suddenly be turned heterosexual.
Oh, and there was a murder plot, but that's not why I'm watching the show.
*This is a joke rather than a serious suggestion. One of the crucial things about both Sidney and Leonard is that they're serious, committed Christians in a tradition-minded denomination. That doesn't make them homophobes--I think they're both capable of coming to the conclusions justice-minded Christians have reached about sexuality--but I think lifelong monogamy is something they'd both see as necessary for an acceptable same-sex relationship, just as for a straight marriage. (Yes, I have been thinking about how to deal with the religious issues if I write fic about them.)
