I've watched about half of the first episode of The Man in the High Castle. Have any of you seen the series? Is it worth continuing? So far the show hasn't managed to make me care about the US being ruled by fascists, much less about its deeply boring straight white protagonists. But that could just be a case of the first episode being made as insipid as possible in order, in the minds of showrunners, to appeal to a broad audience.

I wish I could give you a good or bad review, but I felt the same way. Neither the plot nor the characters really grabbed me and I gave up.

So...uselessly commiserating :) (But it's good to see you full-time online again!!!)

I really enjoyed it. There are non-white characters, but yes, they're all straight. I assume the book was like that. Basically Rufus Sewell made it for me as he's a brilliant actor and is riveting whomever he plays, even a nazi. I've only seen him play British roles - to me he sounded American; I hope he did to real ones.

There's probably half of it set in the Japanese-occupied western states if that helps. But it does move slowly.

I sat down to try it, made it through about half the first episode as well and gave up, feeling a mixture of lack of engagement and a lack of the central concept being in any way escapist (which honestly is what I'm looking for at the moment). I've recently been watching Arrested Development for the first time, which is easy-going, and Wet Hot American Summer (movie and TV spin off on Netflix) which is seriously escapist, weird and also does contain canon gay.

Aha! I have exactly the same question--a friend persuaded me to watch the first episode while at her house, and I'm not sure whether I should continue. Looks like it got one positive vote above, hmmm. M.
