When I read sovay's long and thoughtful review, I realized that a lot (though not all) of my problems with the film were caused by my not being very good at visual and auditory processing. Then there are things that are just personal preferences--you're more comfortable with a blank slate than I am, I think. You're good at filling in the rest, imaginatively, which I think is also why you can create such vivid original characters. I tend to prefer characters who are more of a middle ground, with some development and some unanswered questions, because even if I'm not writing fic I still seem to have the same fanfic impulse to imagine a bit more of them--but just a bit. I don't on the whole like starting from scratch, and it's hard for me to grasp on to a character who's mostly unanswered questions.
I need to read your Dunkirk fic, because I'm sure it will make me care far, far more about the characters than the film ever did. (True story: I clicked on the "Dunkirk" tag on AO3, and the first fic that came up was about characters whose names I didn't even recognize, and I sort of despaired. In my head they're still The Running Soldier We See at the Start, and His Near-Identical Twin the Other Soldier, and The Other Other Soldier Who Probably Dies Because He's Not There At the End, and The Pilot Who Is Taken Prisoner, and The Pilot Who Ends Up on the Boat, and The Naval Officer Played By Kenneth Branagh, and etc. etc.)
