"The Exorcist" 1x01

kindkitI just watched the first episode of The Exorcist, and I am already ferociously shipping Tomas and Marcus, because, damn, they have smokin' hot chemistry.
I'm reserving judgment on the rest of the show, because real-life exorcism has killed a fair number of people and harmed many others.* Though, to be fair, that's usually (not always) exorcism as practiced by freelancers and evangelical groups, not by the Catholic church. Anyway, I'm wary of the combination of a show that is set in our world (not in an explicitly fictional world like Buffy or Supernatural), plus the claim that demons, as defined by Christian religious traditions, exist, possess people, and need to be exorcised. Because far too many people really believe that shit.**
So far the show hasn't done anything I've found skeevy, but I'm waiting to see how it goes. It does seem to be allowing room for doubt and for explanations that, while supernatural, aren't dogmatically Christian.
*This list makes for depressing reading, and it's by no means comprehensive.
**The store where I used to work carried books, including a lot of "Christian books." I was horrified to discover how many titles there are about "spiritual warfare" or which otherwise claim that personal and social problems are caused by literal demons.

It is a horror film setting, though? I mean, I wouldn't want you to be too disappointed if you find it has sunk into a messy pile of horror movie tropes with a topper of hot priest fondling.
