a dubious but tasty holiday

Happy Thanksgiving to US folks who are celebrating. I decided to go for the easiest meal I could think of that was still adequately festive--ham, a potato gratin, creamed peas and onions, and Pumpkin Marble Mousse Bars from Trader Joe's for dessert. I'll have enormous amounts of leftover ham, which suits me fine.
Besides food, I've dedicated today to resting up for Black Friday. I'm actually starting work tomorrow later than I normally would, but it'll still be a ridiculously busy day.
There may be napping today, and there will definitely be the most recent three episodes of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. I started watching this last week and I'm loving it. Especially Dirk himself, who is strange and awkward and startlingly feminine-coded (not necessarily queer-coded, but maybe that too), and kind sometimes and a jerk sometimes, and an entirely different kind of hero from any I've ever seen before. The Second Doctor (my favorite) is probably most similar, but Dirk is simultaneously weirder and more vulnerably human than any Doctor.
There's a lot of other good stuff too but I don't feel like going into full-on review mode. It's a good show, you should try it!* If you live outside the US you can watch it on Netflix; if you're in the US you need to have BBC America. Or explore alternate methods.
*It is really violent, though. Stage blood everywhere, and it can get emotionally dark. But there's neither rape nor sexualized violence so far, which is important to me and maybe to some of you.
No new episode of The Exorcist this week, alas. But I can understand them not wanting to air a struggling show on Black Friday. Plus, I fear that I may not be happy with the direction this episode goes, which makes waiting another week easier.

Date: 2017-11-27 04:58 am (UTC)S1 is super violent throughout, but S2 is a lot less so. There are still some moments of great and disturbing violence, but it feels more like they're there to make a point rather than happening all the time. Certainly there's a lot less blood.
I'll also add that while in S1 the emotional focus is very much on Dirk and Todd, it shifts in S2 and some other characters come into their own more. And S2 has canonically queer characters!
Hoping at least some of this is an inducement to try again! *grins*
