There's a scene in 1x05 when the demon gives Marcus a vision of his mother and she tells him that he should never have been born. "Cost your father his pension," she says, and I've been puzzling over that ever since.
The only explanation I can think of is that Marcus's father was a priest, and he had to leave the priesthood when he got a parishioner pregnant.
Anyone have thoughts? I've tried googling but I can't find any official explanation of this line, or even any other unofficial ones.

Two single person pensions are worth more than one married couple's pension - there's a lot of de facto relationships to preserve two incomes out here. But back when Marcus was born, I'm guessing it would be worse for his parents to be unmarried than it would be to lose their income. Maybe?
I don't get the vibe that Marcus' father was particularly educated or of the social class that a priest would have been in the sixties.
