the magnus archives, series 2

I've now seen through episode 80 (the end of series 2). Spoilers within; please don't spoil me for anything after episode 80. (ETA: Now with an addendum for episode 82, so spoilers through that one.)
There are several points in the last couple of episodes where Jonathan just can't do words anymore.
I kind of feel like that.
I also kind of feel like this: ohmygodomygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodNONONONONOAAAAAAAARGH.
And also kind of like: Well, that explains a lot.
So. Once again, the worst monsters are human (maybe, probably?). Not!Sasha with all its murderous cruelty is at least contained, but Elias bludgeoned an old man to death and left Jon to take the blame. And the old man in question, while not being the servant of cosmic evil we expected, sent several dozen of his own assistants to death-by-book with a shrug of mild consternation.
And the Institute is not merely evil but dedicated to doing the will of one of the entities, and all its employees are acolytes of the Eye whether they know it or not.
And Jon is traumatized to hell and back and is now on the run. And Martin and Tim think he's a murderer.
And all three of them went through Michael's doors at some point, which seems to mean he can grab them back at any time. (As, I presume, the Institute can grab Jon back, and will. Elias isn't letting Jon go or even kicking him out; he's training him, letting him gain experience in the wider world, away from the protection, such as it is, of the Magnus Institute. He's got plans for Jon.)
And and and and and and ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod.
Ahem. So, Gerard Keay also seems to be affiliated with the Eye (if I recall, he's covered in eye tattoos, his book-burning Zippo has an eye sigil, etc. etc.) which may be why he seems to be roughly on the same side as the Institute folks, and therefore is probably involved in something far, far worse than what we've seen yet.
Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod etc. etc.
*hugs Jon and Martin and even Tim, and also Basira and Daisy and Melanie King, and poor dead Gertrude can have a retroactive hug, and I really hope none of them are evil*
Normally I would be gleeful that it seems to be almost canon now that Martin is in love with Jon (and okay, I am slightly gleeful) but this is a terrible, terrible world and no good will come of it. (ETA: The bit in 82, "Eyewitnesses," when Daisy tells Martin that people said he and Jon were close and he's so happy. So flattered and pleased. Oh, Martin, I want to hug you forever and take you away from the scary place.)
Ohmy etc.
(Final note: was that Jonny's father playing Jurgen Leitner, and his mother playing Gertrude Robinson???)

Date: 2020-01-02 07:05 am (UTC)I underestimated Getrude from the start because we only get Jon's perspective. The poor old librarian who was tragically killed and who was also very bad at her job. But she is one of my favorites now (togehter with Daisy, Basira, Melanie and strangely enough Tim is growing on me as well).

Date: 2020-01-03 04:35 pm (UTC)I had somehow thought that the institute workers will start to "hunt monsters" à la Buffy the longer the series goes on (might still happen). Still when I think about it only watching and documenting the occurences/attacks without them actively trying to defend people is kind of terrible as well.
But I'm happy that they are all somewhat safe as long as they work there.

Date: 2020-01-04 08:45 am (UTC)From his perspective after that: his boss has a paranoid breakdown of some kind and starts literally stalking him, his co-worker Martin is only worried about making sure said boss is okay, their collective higher-up doesn't even give Jon a slap on the wrist (just some evidence to placate him and a mild suggestion that he stop stalking people), and then he discovers that he CAN'T QUIT, because apparently the whole workplace is supernatural in some way (and, given everything they study, he knows it's not going to be a good way).
I think he's frequently aiming his anger in the wrong directions and being a dick, but that's a very human and understandable thing.
In the immortal words of the official transcript: "[EXTENDED SOUNDS OF BRUTAL PIPE MURDER]"
