I have a WIP again. Which, mercifully, does not look like it's going to turn huge on me.
It's Buttons + ensemble, gen in the sense that it's not primarily a pairing fic, but a lot of it's about gender and sexuality. And witchcraft.
Buttons and Stede have a little chat, under the cut.
The sea knows its own. Captain Bonnet's as ignorant as any landsman, doesn't know tides from tiddlywinks, but when Nathaniel looks at him there's a prickling at the back of his mind, like something else is watching too. It's why he signed on, why he stopped the mutiny.
"This is the life, isn't it, Buttons?" captain says. It's late, almost two bells into the midnight watch, and even the hostages are asleep. But captain's been roaming. Crying when he thinks no one sees, like he has been off and on from the day the ship sailed out of Bridgetown harbor.
The sea brings salt water, witches say. Well, Nathaniel says, and that's good enough. Just because the sea knows you, doesn't mean it'll always be kind.
