Part of me feels like COVID in a fanfic is different than COVID in original/real/"serious" writing, but that may be a false distinction. How it's written is more important.
The current general attitude towards COVID shocks me. Doctors and nurses not masking at work! (Even, one hears, in places like oncology clinics where it used to be the norm.) The government failure to mandate and fund mitigations like air filtration. And above all, the lack of tracking which makes it impossible to make a case for mitigations, mask mandates, or anything. In a way it feels akin to this country's endless cycle of gun violence--there seems to be no amount of death that is enough to change anything.
