kindkitOne of the nice things about being fannishly active again is that I can do fannish memes! This one, called "Frankenstein's meme" because it's patched together from bits of other memes, is stolen from trobadora via my network.
First question, answer, and full list of questions under the cut.
1. What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?
Well, I have one, for a start. I'd given up on ever again being really fannish (according to my own definition thereof). Certainly there were some fandoms where I loved the source text a lot and was invested in it, like the Magnus Archives and Rusty Quill Gaming. But they never really kicked off my fic-writing impulse, which for me was always an important aspect of fannishness. And I stayed pretty distant from most fandom activities.
And now I have a new fandom, Our Flag Means Death. And while I'm still keeping my fannish distance in some ways (for good reason, because like all fandoms it has a strong strain of things I really don't want to deal with), I'm happily interacting on DW, looking at fanart on Twitter, reading such fic as gets recced and sounds interesting. And writing! I've written three short fics already and I've nearly finished the second draft of what's by far the longest fic I've ever written. This after being pretty much unable to write fic for close to 8 years. (I'd consider my last "real" fics to be a couple of Psmith fics I wrote in December 2014. After that, there were only very intermittent ficlets and drabbles.)
What changed? Dunno. Something's changed in me, though, enough that I'm able to relax a bit about what I'm writing and just enjoy it even if it's maybe self-indulgent and not Important.
What's different about OFMD? Also dunno, although I think an explicitly, joyously queer-friendly canon with canonical male/male pairings and no hedging about whether they actually are/want to be having sex makes a big difference. But more about OFMD tomorrow.
Am I glad to be writing and participating in fandom again? Hell yes. I am a Bitter Old Fandom King (do people still say Bitter Old Fandom Queen? Probably only bitter old fandom queens and kings, which I'm okay with) so I am wary of some shit that I know is happening (e.g. some racism and some cutesifying/objectifying of the main characters by cishet slash fans). But I feel like myself again, really myself for the first time in a long time. Not being in fandom was a loss. It made me sad. I'm glad to be back.
