I still aten't dead
Feb. 5th, 2015 12:10 pmI've been around very little lately, because the unsecured wifi connection I habitually piggyback on has once again disappeared. It's been gone for almost a month now, and while posting about the fact that it's gone is usually a good way to bring it back (/magical thinking), I suspect it really may be gone for good this time. But I am fine and will try to be intermittently around. There's a pay-for-time wifi thing available now, so when I can afford to buy a chunk of time, I will. Today is payday and I'm buying a week's worth of access, so I'll be around for the next little bit.
I have been:
1) Reading Paul Cornell's The Severed Streets, his sequel to London Falling (yay, it's excellent!) and Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor (it's okay but could have been much better) and trying once again to read Moby Dick and getting bogged down early on at the sermon chapters, just like I did the last time I tried to read it.
2) Listening to Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars, another Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast story, and loving it. It is hilarious and you should all give it a try. You do not have to like westerns to enjoy it, I promise--it plays with western tropes but in a very conscious way, just like it plays with sff tropes. The characters are great and did I mention it's hilarious? The story is fairly arc-y so you'll want to start at the beginning: a list of episodes is here and you can download them all here.
3) Cooking and baking a bit, though my ever-changing work schedule can make that difficult sometimes. Most recently I baked bran muffins using this recipe at the Smitten Kitchen. They're very tasty, though my advice is to skip the fussy "fruit filled" business and just mix the fruit in. This time I used apple, pre-cooked a bit to make sure it would soften enough; next time I'm thinking cherries and orange zest.
