wait, who?

What my reaction to a new Doctor Who episode used to be: "OMG I can't wait I can't wait okay finally it's time yay," and then, depending on the episode, delight or fury.

What my reaction is these days: "Oh, is Doctor Who on again? I guess I should watch it," and then, generally, a big meh afterwards.

It's funny. As much as Russell T. Davies' showrunning decisions sometimes enraged me, I never felt as indifferent as I do now. And as much as I generally adored Moffat's one-off episodes during the Davies era, I don't think he's doing a great job with the show as a whole. Although I really like Matt Smith's performances as the Doctor, and I think I will like Clara (despite wishing Amy and Rory were still around), the show itself is boring me. I'm tired of it being all about earth (next week's episode at least seems to be set somewhere else, thank god), and I'm tired of feel-good inspirational morals tacked onto the stories, and I'm actually getting a bit tired of Moffat's plot-twisting wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff. I want the show to be more adventure-y and yet simultaneously less frenetic; I want characterization and relationships of a depth that Moffat and his colleagues' writing doesn't explore (the actors try, but they can only compensate for so much); I want more real creativity in the plots and less tedious allegory about the internet or whatever. I want the show to be genuinely morally serious and dark if it's claiming to be, and more fun if it's trying to be fun.

While I'm wishing, I'd like companions other than conventionally attractive women in their late teens or early twenties from contemporary Britain. I'd like two or three companions in the TARDIS again, to mix up the boring and I think increasingly heteronormative dynamic of the Doctor and a single female companion. I'd like less heterosexuality, or more non-heterosexual characters and dynamics, or both.

I'd like better writing. Surely there are writers out there somewhere of the caliber of a Malcolm Hulke, Robert Holmes, or Terry Nation? (All of whom had their missteps on Who and elsewhere *sideyes The Talons of Weng Chiang*, but all of whom produced a lot of interesting worlds, real-feeling conflicts, and vivid characters. I know that TV has changed and the leisurely, detailed episodes of the 1960s and 1970s aren't possible now, alas, but surely there are writers who can do more than trot out twenty clichés in 45 minutes and call it a story? Or are there? I honestly don't know; nothing on contemporary British television seems as good to me as the best episodes of classic Who or Blake's 7 or Callan or Colditz, but maybe I've just missed the best things.)

All of this makes me imagine the approaching 50th anniversary special, which is bound to incorporate a lot of elements of classic Who and engage, one way or another, with the relationship between new and classic Who, with a good deal of trepidation. I actually would feel better if Russell T. Davies were writing it.

Have another picture of Christopher Neame in an astonishing hat. This one's from "Shada," the unaired 1980 Doctor Who story written by Douglas Adams:

I finally got around to watching the Doctor Who Christmas special last night. It was spoilers )

In other news, I am dangerously excited for tonight's Sherlock episode. This almost certainly means I am doomed to disappointment.

I finished re-reading The Taking of Planet 5 tonight (yes, I am re-reading the EDAs at quite a pace). A few spoilery reactions )

It occurred to me recently that there were, actually, a couple of Eighth Doctor Adventures novels (with Fitz in them) that I hadn't read: the two volumes of Interference by Lawrence Miles. I'm not quite sure why I left what are widely considered to be key books in the series for last . . . except possibly that they are so widely considered the EDAs, and I have a perverse tendency to avoid things that are widely and strongly hyped. Well, there's also the fact that I'm not particularly a Lawrence Miles fan, having greatly disliked both The Adventuress of Henrietta Street and what I've read of his blog posts about Doctor Who.

But eventually it seemed silly to keep on not reading Interference. So I read it.

I've finally given in and started reading The Gallifrey Chronicles, the last Eighth Doctor Adventures novel. I was braced for Fitz being written badly, because the book's by Lance Parkin and he always writes Fitz badly/contemptuously. But I still wasn't quite prepared to see spoilers )

1) I have the energy to post again now, because the doctor took me off the medicine (a beta-blocker) that was making me dizzy, exhausted, and brain-dead. I'm starting to remember what normal feels like, yay! Maybe soon I'll be together enough to resume writing fic.

2) I've been back at work since Sunday. It was very hard at first (especially while I was still having bad dizziness) but the boss and my co-workers have been pretty damn awesome. I'm readjusting, which is good because tomorrow I have to work a full eight hours on my feet. Eep.

3) There aren't a whole lot of upsides to anemia, but I have learned to cook dirty rice, which is very tasty as well as containing lots of iron-rich chicken livers. (I put great dollops of hot sauce on mine, as though it's jambalaya.) Any of you know other good recipes for chicken livers in, er, a fairly disguised form? I don't dislike the taste of liver, exactly, but I find it too strong to eat more than a couple of bites of, say, a sauteed chicken liver.

4) Yesterday I read Mary Roach's Packing for Mars, and now I need to read everything else she's ever written. Her writing has a lot of style and wit, and I must bow down to someone who includes, in her book on the pitfalls of space travel, a detailed discussion of a porn movie ostensibly shot in zero G (Roach concludes, based on the behavior of, er, liquids, that it wasn't).

5) I have also now read all of the Eighth Doctor Adventures novels except the very last. Well, all of the ones with Fitz in, except the very last. I can't quite bring myself to start The Gallifrey Chronicles, partly because I don't want the series to end, partly because it's by Lance Parkin, who hates my favorite characters. I've heard enough bad stuff about what he does in the book to make avoiding it seem wise. And yet my inner completist nags me.

6) The second half of Sanctuary S3 starts very soon! Which is great, but also bad because my fic (partly set after the aired episodes) is very much not finished and will now inevitably be jossed. Also, I fear there will be More Canonical Het Romance For Everyone. *sigh* I'd much rather see Great Adventures For Everyone. Or Genuinely Thoughtful Character Development For Everyone.

7) I'm trying to cheerfully look forward to the Doctor Who Easter special while simultaneously keeping my expectations low. (I am unspoiled. Please don't make any spoilery comments at all, not even hints.) It's not that I have any particular reason to worry, just that I find my relationship with new Who is happier if I don't get my hopes up too much.

8) Tell me things! What are you enjoying, fannishly, or looking forward to? What's something cool you've read/watched/listened to lately? I feel out of touch. I've been trying to keep up with my DW and LJ reading lists, but I haven't had much brain to spare. Which is also why in a lot of cases I haven't responded to comments. Sorry about that; your comments are always appreciated, it's just that for most of the last three weeks I've had the energy level and brain capacity of blue-green algae.

If you're at all a Second Doctor fan, go and read [livejournal.com profile] roachpatrol's adorable Don't You Ever Change ASAP. Jamie and the Doctor play dress-up. And there are illustrations!

Will "Zagreus" make sense if I listen to it without having heard previous Eighth Doctor audios? (I'm planning my listening for the upcoming long drive.)

And if I should listen to other Eighth Doctor audios first, which ones? "All of them" is not an option.

Day 16 – Your Favorite Who-Related FanFic

How lucky we are that "favorite" is indefinite; it could mean one favorite or it could mean, er, five favorites.

In no particular order:

The Space Between Opposites, by Storyseller. (Ten/Simm!Master, teen)

This smart, challenging, exquisitely-crafted story explores the Master/Doctor relationship (post-LotTL AU) through the lens of the Gallifreyan language. Wonderfully layered and resonant.

The Unwritten History of the Time War by [livejournal.com profile] wishfulaces (Fitz Kreiner, Ninth Doctor, teen)

Five iterations of the Ninth Doctor coming back to find Fitz after the Time War. Mostly heartbreaking, all brilliant. This story was written for me in the EDA Ficathon, and I love it enormously.

Basic Physics, by Louisifer (Ten/Simm Master, adult)

One night on the Valiant, the Master explains the universe to the Doctor. Subtle, lovely, and heartbreaking.

A Moment's Grace, by Branwyn (Martha Jones, Second Doctor, teen)

Martha and the Second Doctor during the year that wasn't. This is a story about pain and comfort, but it avoids all the hurt/comfort cliches and offers wonderful insight into both characters.

British Summer Time, by Nostalgia. (Two, Jamie, Zoe, all ages)

The Second Doctor finally manages to take Zoe and Jamie to the beach. This story pokes a little gentle, affectionate fun at the characters, and is full of charm.

Hmm, I'm surprised by the preponderance of New Who fic on my list. Although considering how much more New Who fic gets written than Classic Who fic, I guess it shouldn't be surprising that New Who also has more really outstanding stories.

Day 15 – Favorite Who-Related Tumblr

This question annoys me. Why Tumblr? What the hell is Tumblr anyway? I've been to their site, and as far as I can tell from the brief look that was as long as my interest would permit, it's just another blogging site with a touch of Flickr thrown in. Seriously, could someone please explain to me why Tumblr is suddenly the Next Awesome Thing?

/curmudgeonliness

Needless to say, I don't have a favorite Who-related Tumblr. The Doctor Who Image Archive is the best site I know of for Who-related images, although it has definite limitations and I'm dismayed to see it hasn't been updated in over a year.

Day 12 – Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

Today is Big Finish Day! The first 50 Big Finish audios are on sale for £5 each (in U.S. prices, $7.52 plus $2.30 shipping for a CD or $5 for a handy download).

I haven't listened to a lot of these audios, but it definitely tickles my fancy to recommend #02, "Phantasmagoria." It's my favorite of the Five-and-Turlough Big Finish stories, and I have heard all of those. I much prefer it to the more widely recced "Loups Garoux," which I found preachy and sexually-creepy-in-a-bad-way. I've got a brief, nonspoilery review of those two and a few other audios here.

While you're at Big Finish, be sure to get your free download of the first episode of "Cobwebs," which starts a new series featuring Five, Nyssa, Tegan, and Turlough. I haven't listened to it yet, but the prospect of all four of them together in a new story is wonderful.

Day 13 – Your Favorite Villain

The Master, of course. Especially when played by Roger Delgado.

Day 14 – The Villain Who Scared You the Most

I seldom find Doctor Who all that scary (and I'm easily scared). But the two-faced automaton judge things in "The Beast Below" utterly freaked me out and were the highlight of an otherwise disappointing episode.
